The number of host families that check the background of their future Au Pair or Nanny increases every year.   Most Families do this check themselves  when using a nanny or Au Pair web sites to hire an in home help.

Also nannies or Au Pairs have this posibility.

When you apply for an Au Pair or nanny position, you can expect a background check done by the Host family before you are hired.

As you are looking for an Au Pair or Nanny on-line you are responsible for the cost of the background investigations.

Here are some examples used frequently in the USA (Not all checks can be achived in Europe, as there are different laws (when personal data are involved).

Host Families and employment agencies typically can perform

• criminal checks ($50)
• motor vehicle check ($30)
• social security scan ($40)
• education history ($30)
• Past employments check  

Although credit checks for nanny candidates is controversial, credit reports can alert employers to fraudulent addresses, numbers, employment history, and assumed names.
The Host family will need your permission before checking your credit and it may cost about $25 to check credit.  

Some Host families may also require a drug test.

Parents or Host Families should also consider contacting the given references directly.

An Au Pair or a Nanny can also check the backgrounds of their future host families. At the very least you should do a Google search of the parents’ names.
