What are the responebilities of an Au Pair? 

Your responsibilities as an Au Pair will be mainly concentrated in looking after your host families children, and helping out with some light household duties. (e.g. vacuuming, ironing, empting the dishwasher, and helping with the preparation of the meals).

Depending if you work as a standard Au Pair, Au Pair plus, or Mothers help, you will be working between 20 and 40 hours a week, 5 days and a half a week, and no more than 8-10 hours in one day. (depending of the country).

A typical day in the Au Pairs life could look like this:

• In the morning you wake up the children, prepare their breakfast, (if they are very young) you help them get dressed, clean teeth and get them ready for school.

• You take them to school and collect them if required.

• This also applies for the children’s outdoor activities.

• It is your duty to keep the children’s room tidy, make their beds and clear up their toys

• Help them to do their homework.

• If necessary you will baby-sit when the parents go out in the evening.

Please keep in mind that every family has different requirements.  These depend mostly on the age of the children.    It is important that there is always a balance between the work at home, and leisure time to study and attend language courses, or spend time with other Au Pairs.

Being a Family member, most probably your Host family would like you to show their children the traditions and the culture of your country.    Since both for the Au Pair and the Host family it is a cultural exchange.
